Hey all,
I usually steer clear of the mass broadcast requests, but this one is bicycle and kid related. I like bikes and I am a 41 year old kid ;^} so I’m risking it. The SPOKES program in a community service project that teach at-risk youth to fix bikes. They are way behind. There are many bikes and many on the waiting list but not enough man-power. So SPOKES is holding a mass repair day on August 1st from 10 – 2.
If you could come out for just an hour or two to turn a wrench, please come on out. I’ll be there from 10-2. See below for details. Please pass the word around if you have access to queencity or MPZ bike clubs mailing lists as this is a worthy cause for a local bike club to be involved.
I just found out that Staunton Police is turning all of their collection of unclaimed/abandoned bikes to this program so there will be more parts with which to put complete bikes together.
Thanks,

Mike,
Could you please send this around? Thanks!
Isaac Diggs from the Office on Youth and shop boss of our SPOKES program ( www.saw2010.info click on “seedlings” and scroll down), is holding a mass repair day on Saturday, August 1st from 10:00 – 2:00 at the Boys and Girls Club in Waynesboro to fix bikes that will be donated to local children/youth who are on a waiting list. These are kids who would not otherwise have the means to own a bike. Since the teens in the SPOKES program can only work on a few bikes at a time there is a huge backlog of bikes and kids on the waiting list. Therefore, we are looking for adults who are willing to donate some time to help fix up bikes on that day. People do not need to come for the entire time, even an hour would be most appreciated. If folks prefer, they may take a bike (or more) home to work on and return when done, on their own time table. Most of the bikes need only minor repair: new seats, fixed breaks, rust removal, etc. There will be parts and tools available for use but feel free to bring your own socket wrenches etc.
Anyone interested in helping should call Amber Ham or Diane Kellogg at 332-3806 or me at 942-6757 as soon as possible.
A little bit of donated time can make a BIG difference!
Thank you so much,
